Basaga Holiday Residence, Kuching

After many years of neglect, the project to convert a charming old villa close to the centre of Kuching into a quality hotel began in 2008 - though Project Orangutan's involvement began a decade afterwards. The main house is a building with much history; it was reputedly built at the turn of the 20th century during the reign of the second of the infamous White Rajahs of Sarawak, Charles Brooke. It is a fine example of mansions built during that period, featuring thick columns and heavy ‘Belian’ or ‘Ironwood’ accents. The various outbuildings which have been added to the property over the years now contain the restaurant, bar and additional bedrooms, and a swimming pool now occupies prime position in the centre of the manicured lawn.

This is another co-ownership venture with a local partner, and 50% of the profits from the business go straight to funding our conservation work.
